Can Web3 gaming expand into esports focused ‘win to earn’? w/Axie.gg – SlateCast #37

Chief from Axie.GG sees the future of blockchain gaming in esports, and expects Axie Infinity to lose leadership but remain a part of the ecosystem.

Chief from AxieGG met with CryptoSlate’s Akiba to talk about AxieGG and the future of Web3 gaming and Axie Infinity‘s future in it.

What is AxieGG

AxieGG is a gaming guild organized by players and investors originally solely focused on Axie Infinity. The guild invests in top-tier digital assets from web3 games such as Axie Infinity. After a careful gamer selection process, guild members gain access to AxieGG’s “lethal lending library,” where they can trade their Axie characters.

Chief said he joined Axie four years ago by switching from trading card games. “Owning your pokemon sounds like a future to me,” Chief said and added that he was drawn to the idea of selling cards via crypto instead of trading like players used to do.

Soon after he started playing, He wanted to form a team to participate in esports tournaments and created AxieGG. “I kind of went from hand to hand,” he said, “in half a year, we won 90% of the tournaments we entered.”

Web3’s progress and potential

Referring to the number of different Web3 game types, Chief said everyone is just trying to do the right thing. There have been lots of trial and error, and many mistakes have been made in the Web3 gaming space. But, according to Chief, all these are done to discover the best method.

He said:

“Everyone out there is trying to do the right thing, but no one is quite sure what the right thing is yet… They’re trying everything, and in the next few years we’ll know what the best way is.”

While acknowledging that significant mistakes are still made in the gaming sphere, Chief also said that the potential of Web3 gaming is undeniable. While the mainstream people hate it, he said, intelligent Web3 people, understand the potential and admit that it makes sense.

Chief also said that the strong reaction of the mainstream gaming sphere is also a sign of the potential of Web3. He stated:

“The problem is they lose control. Web2 doesn’t want to give it up just like the gas industry doesn’t want electric cars to be a thing.”

Future of Web3 Gaming

When Akiba asked about Chief’s opinion on the future of Web3 gaming, Chief said that he expected the space to evolve into a winning-focused perspective where players are rewarded for their ability to be the best.

Giants of Web3 gaming like Polkastarter Gaming, Zilliqa, and Tyranno Studios have been expressing that the blockchain gaming space started to focus more on the gameplay rather than the ‘easy earning’ aspects.

On the other hand, Chief doesn’t directly agree with Axie’s competitors. According to Chief, “play to earn” will be transformed to “win to earn.” He argues that gaming should be competitive. People should be able to talk about it, host esports championships with it, and have streams.

In a way, Chief’s win-to-earn also leans towards a gameplay-focused perspective. He states:

“Win to earn. Because that’s how you build hype, build social media and create a narrative. You don’t earn just to push a button. You earn because you deserved it by winning.”

Future for Axie

Chief finalized his words by talking briefly about Axie Infinity’s future in the upcoming “win to earn” Web3 gaming space.

Referring to the Ronin Bridge attack back in March 2022, the Chief said Axie Infinity might be too big to fail. “Half a billion dollars just disappeared, and it was just like business as usual,” he said, “they had to give up some of their portions to pay for the mistakes they did. But they paid it now, and they’re coming back stronger.”

Regarding Axie’s place in the next evolution of Web3 gaming, Chief said that he didn’t expect Axie to be the leading game forever. “It’ll be around,” he assured the audience, “but Axie is too simple. We need a more complex game” to lead the future Web3 gaming sphere.

Dappradar Report Shows Blockchain Gaming Thrived Amid FTX Collapse, Sector Accounted For 46% Of All Network Activity

According to a report published by the global dapp store platform, Dappradar, blockchain gaming hardly felt the impact of the recent FTX collapse and the crypto market carnage that ensued. Dappradar’s Blockchain Games Report indicates that the number of daily unique active wallets (dUAW) participating in blockchain gaming dropped slightly to 800,875 UAWs in November, down from just above 900,000 UAWs recorded during the last two months. Moreover, Dappradar says that blockchain gaming accounted for “a healthy 46% of all blockchain activity.”

Report: Blockchain Gaming Shrugs off FTX Collapse With More Than 800,000 Daily Unique Active Wallets

A study published by Dappradar and shared with Bitcoin.com News shows that despite the recent FTX fallout, blockchain gaming has remained steadfast. Presently, a significant amount decentralized apps (dapps) from dappradar.com’s top dapp list are blockchain games like Alien Worlds, Splinterlands, Farmers World, Benji Bananas, and Planet IX.

Dappradar’s report says the most popular blockchain in terms of blockchain gaming was Wax, and the BNB chain was the second-most popular blockchain. Wax had an average of 344,284 daily UAWs, while the BNB blockchain saw an average of 171,269 dUAWs.

The BNB blockchain did take a hit after the FTX collapse, as the number of average dUAWs dropped by 35% in November. Dappradar’s study says Solana took a much bigger hit as November’s gaming activity via Solana was down 89.42%.

Solana’s dUAW stats indicate it dropped to “2,326 daily UAWs, the lowest number it has registered thus far,” the Dappradar researcher’s noted. “The Wax-based Alien Worlds managed to grow its user base by an impressive 25% to emerge as the most-played game of all, with 212,000 dUAWs,” the report details.

Splinterlands was the second-most-played blockchain game with 169,000 dUAWs, Dappradar explains. “Upland, the AR mobile estate game, continues to be on a downward trend in activity, and in October it reached 31,595 dUAW,” Thursday’s report highlights.

“The mobile game Trickshot Blitz had an astonishing increase of 70% in activity month over month. The casual game on the Flow blockchain reached 23,086 dUAW.” The report also shows that interest in Axie Infinity continues to decline. The report states:

Axie Infinity continues along its downward trend: this October they had an average of 19,434 dUAW, a 21% decrease from September. Nonetheless, they announced the release of Axie Infinity: Raylights, their first third-party product utilizing existing Axie NFTs in a new way.

Game7 Launches $100 Million Grants Program To Push Web3 Gaming Development

Game7, a blockchain gaming-focused DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) has announced the launch of a $100 million grants program. The objective of this grants program is to support the Web3 gaming community in these times of market downturn and to advance the adoption of blockchain gaming on several chains.

Game7 to Support Blockchain Gaming With $100 Million

Game7, a Web3 gaming-dedicated project which has already supported projects on different chains including Arbitrum, Polygon, Immutable X, and Solana, has announced the launch of a $100 million grants program to support Web3 gaming companies. The chain-agnostic project announced that the objective of this move is to offer support to these initiatives to push the Web3 gaming ecosystem forward even in unfavorable times for the crypto industry.

The organization, which is a DAO supported by Bitdao and Forte, aims to distribute these funds over the next five years to the best projects presenting their initiatives. The grants will be distributed among five different areas, including technology, events, diversity, education, and research.

On the direction of these funds, Game7 contributor Ronen Kirsh declared:

Improving smart contract standards, tooling, interoperable wallets, and scaling solutions will be crucial on the path to global adoption of Web3 games. We have allocated 20% of our committed treasury to fund each of these crucial components so the gaming industry can focus on building sustainable game economies.

Direction and Similar Web3 Programs

The first sector to receive grants will be the tech area, which will focus on supporting teams preparing open-source development in certain key areas, including game development tooling, smart contracts and standards, core infrastructure, and community tooling. Game7 grants support goes beyond just economic assistance, as it includes access to tech support, mentoring, and early access to Game7 initiatives.

Game7 believes in Web3 gaming as a force that can empower gamers and gaming companies alike, allowing them to benefit and grow together. This is according to John Allen, a representative of Bitdao, who stated:

We believe this new model of games within a world where users and developers are aligned, has the potential to grant greater distribution of equity and ownership.

Web3 gaming has been one of the few areas of the cryptocurrency world that have continued to grow even amid the economic woes the industry faces, according to a report issued in September by Dappradar. Companies and VC funds such as Griffin Gaming Partners, Forte, and A16z have launched millionaire funding initiatives for companies involved in these types of projects throughout 2022.

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls Today’s Metaverse A ‘Poorly Built Video Game’

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls Today’s Metaverse A ‘Poorly Built Video Game’

Phil Spencer, CEO of gaming at Microsoft and head of Xbox, directed some criticism at the idea of the metaverse and how it is being executed. Spencer remarked that for him, the current metaverse is a “poorly built video game,” but also that the sector was still in its early stages and will surely evolve.

Phil Spencer Blasts Today’s Metaverse

While the still unclear concept of “the metaverse” has been harnessed by several companies that want to leverage the advantage of being pioneers in an industry, other important personalities have criticized the current sector. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox at Microsoft, blasted today’s metaverse technology during the WSJ Live Convention, noting that it was still unpolished.

About today’s metaverse, Spencer stated:

It’s a poorly built video game.

Many interpreted this statement as an indirect jab at Meta, which has been criticized before due to the poor graphics its flagship metaverse app Horizon Worlds presented compared to modern video games. Spencer elaborated later on his remarks, explaining that “video game creators have an amazing ability to build compelling worlds that we want to go spend time in; building a metaverse that’s like a living room is not how I want to spend my time.”

However, Spencer does not count out the concept of the metaverse just yet. To the executive, it is still the early days of the industry, and he believes that the metaverse will evolve to become like current video games.

Spencer’s Previous Metaverse Criticism

This is not the first time that Spencer has voiced skepticism about the buzz surrounding the current concept of the metaverse. In August, Spencer explained that for him, the metaverse was nothing new and that it had more than 30 years in the making, including 3D games as part of this technology. He also said that play-to-earn (P2E) models were a “hammer looking for a nail.”

In the same way, Spencer has rejected the NFT (non-fungible token) gaming model, calling it exploitive and filled with “speculation and experimentation.” In January, Microsoft revealed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, stating that gaming would “play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms.”

Bitcoin.com News also recently reported that Microsoft was working on bridging more technologies like Microsoft Cloud with metaverse apps, to serve as the artificial intelligence and analysis layer for various applications.
