A New Computer Vision Technique Can Recover 3D Info From 2D Images

Currently, a new technique in computer vision may enhance our 3D understanding of 2D images. 3D models are a collection of points in 3D space, so they have a length, width, and depth. 2D images only have length and width components. It’s been an important part of computer vision studies. Computer vision is a field of artificial intelligence enabling computers to derive information from images, videos, and other inputs. The problem is difficult for several reasons, one being that information is inevitably lost when a scene that takes place in 3D is reduced to a 2D representation.

3D understanding of 2D images:

There are some 3D modeling programs out there that can help you sculpt or create 3D models out of single 2D images. They do require a bit of time and patience. There is no software yet that can take a single two-dimensional image and produce a robust three-dimensional model. However, using a series of two-dimensional images and making a three-dimensional model through a process called photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is the art, science, and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment through processes of recording, measuring, and interpreting photographic images and patterns of recorded radiant electromagnetic energy and other phenomena.

There are some well-established strategies for recovering 3D information from multiple 2D images, but they each have some limitations. That is virtual correspondences (VCs). VCs are a pair of pixels from two images whose camera rays intersect in 3D. Similar to classic correspondences, VCs conform with epipolar geometry; unlike classic correspondences, VCs do not need to be co-visible across views.

Virtual correspondences offer a way to carry things further, that one photo is taken from the left side of a rabbit and another photo is taken from the right side. Researchers want to make computers that can understand the three-dimensional world just like humans do and they need to develop computers that can not only interpret still images but can also understand short video clips and eventually full-length movies.

Unity CEO Predicts Websites Will Mutate To Metaverse Destinations Before 2030

John Riccitiello, CEO of Unity, one of the leading real-time 3D engine providers, has predicted that the internet will become part of the metaverse in the next several years. The executive predicted that most websites will become metaverse destinations and that this change will be mostly completed by the year 2030. However, legacy sites will still be around at the time, according to Riccitiello.

Several companies are now interested in how the metaverse could be a part of our lives in the near future. Unity, a company specializing in providing real-time 3D solutions, has predicted that most of the internet will be metaverse-based by 2030. John Riccitiello, CEO of the company, stated that 2D websites will mutate into metaverse destinations and that these will be interconnected. The CEO made the remarks during a keynote at AWE, an augmented reality event, last week.

Among the web destinations, there will essentially be three kinds, according to the prediction. First, sites that will be fully metaverse-integrated, identified as “places you could live and inhabit.” The second kind will blend real-world locations with extended capabilities, and another class of sites will be just “a little bit of a layer atop today’s world,” augmenting it.

These metaverse experiences will be able to be enjoyed fully with adequate hardware but will also have to adapt to other, less capable hardware like PCs and mobile phones.

Realtime 3D Experiences and the Metaverse

The CEO of Unity also commented on the importance of the real-time characteristic in these metaverse destinations, meaning that each interaction with these worlds is experienced for the first time when it happens, as opposed to movies, where interactions are always the same.

This is where real-time engine providers enter the stage, giving designers the tools to create and enhance such metaverse experiences. In an interview, Riccitiello stated that more than 50% of the real-time 3D experiences in the market are built using Unity’s products. The recent purchases of the company, including the Ziva Dynamics and Weta Digital acquisitions, have the goal of further improving the technology of the company to provide more immersion in its real-time products.

Unity is not the only real-time engine company interested in the metaverse. Its direct competitor, Unreal Engine 5, developed by Epic Games, is also a contender, with the objective of providing high-quality worlds and interactions for metaverse applications.

Sony Partners With Theta Labs To Launch 3D NFTs For Its Spatial Reality Display

Sony Group Corporation has revealed it has partnered with Theta Labs in order to launch 3D non-fungible token (NFT) assets. The upcoming NFTs will be crafted for the Sony Spatial Reality Display and are designed for three-dimensional viewing.

Sony 3D NFTs to Enhance Spatial Reality Display Features

The Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation Sony is working with Theta Labs, the creators of the Theta blockchain. The Theta project is described as a decentralized video streaming network or video delivery network with its own native crypto asset, theta network (THETA). According to Sony’s announcement sent to Bitcoin.com News, the electronics giant plans to issued ten “Tiki Guy” NFTs, and the firm is issuing two-dimensional versions as well.

The NFTs are created for the Sony Spatial Reality Display (SRD), a tablet that leverages technologies like augmented reality and 3D enhancements. Sony’s official Youtube channel published a video that showcases the SRD device and the aforementioned technologies the tablet leverages.

“Our legacies of cutting-edge visual and spatial realities combine in an incredible 3D optical experience where detailed texture, high contrast, and luminous brightness come together to create a portal to another world,” Sony’s video description explains.

Sony Exec: ‘NFTs Are a Great Way to Showcase the Potential of Sony’s SRD’

SRD plans to incorporate NFTs and metaverse concepts into the device’s offerings and Nick Colsey, Sony’s VP of business development, believes NFTs will enhance the experience. “Immersive, three-dimensional NFTs are a great way to showcase the potential of Sony’s Spatial Reality Display for metaverse enthusiasts and collectors,” Colsey said in a statement.

The Sony and Theta Labs partnership follows the Theta Hackathon that took place two weeks ago, and Bridgetower Capital launching a Theta Enterprise Validator Node. Theta network (THETA), however, has lost 86.1% in value against the U.S. dollar since April 16, 2021.

30-day stats show THETA is down 33.7% since last month. In terms of the 17 blockchains that issued NFTs, Theta network is the 14th largest in terms of sales volume. As far as all-time statistics, Theta has seen $14.74 million in NFT sales via 1,279 buyers, 1,159 sellers, and 8,165 transactions.

Meta Brings Metaverse-Like 3D Ads To Facebook And Instagram

Meta is bringing interactive 3D ads to Facebook and Instagram feeds, inspired by the metaverse pivot the company has begun to execute since its name change. This is possible due to a new integration in Meta’s AR (Augmented Reality) publishing library with a development from a company called Vntana.

Vntana Integrates 3D Ads in Meta’s Apps

Publishers will now be able to include 3D models in their ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, that belong to Meta. This innovation will allow any publisher to include these metaverse-inspired ads in the feeds the platforms, with users being able to interact with the objects. The innovation was presented by a company called Vntana, which acts as a service provider so other companies can include their 3D assets in social feeds.

According to a press release issued by the company, Vntana has exclusive access to Meta’s AR API to integrate their services to be able to achieve this goal. “Just like regular ads, 3D ads appear in users’ Facebook and Instagram feeds displaying interactive 3D models that users can tap and interact with – moving the product around to view all angles,” the release details.

Metaverse Monetization

This innovation might be part of the first monetization strategies that include metaverse-like elements in Meta-owned platforms. On this, Ashley Crowder, co-founder and CEO of Vntana, stated:

3D and AR technology in online ads is the next frontier for brands looking to connect with the digital consumer and is a great first step into the metaverse.

She further stated that this release might bring democratization to the ad space in these platforms, given that now more companies can bring their products to pontential customers. Customers are also said to benefit because they can see a more detailed model of these products in a 3D, metaverse-like view.

Chris Barbour, director of Augmented Reality Business Development & Partnerships at Meta, declared:

3D and AR open a new door of advertising possibilities for retail and e-commerce brands, improving the customer experience from the point of acquisition.

Meta’s flagship AR app, Horizon Worlds, which offers a set of metaverse experiences for users, is currently not being monetized by the company. This technology might be used in the future to allow Meta to monetize and include ads from different brands in these spaces.
