Microsoft Plans To Shut Down Its Social Virtual Reality Platform

Microsoft intends to shut down Altspace VR, a social virtual reality platform by 10th March

On March 10, 2023, Microsoft intends to shut down Altspace VR, a social virtual reality (VR) platform. Just days after announcing 10,000 job cutbacks worldwide as part of the reorganization process, the titan of Silicon Valley disclosed the news in a blog post.

A more open, accessible, and safe form of immersive experiences in the metaverse is now the company’s even larger ambition, according to the blog post. “As we look to the future, we see the possibilities for VR spreading beyond consumer into the enterprise,” it says. We hope to create a platform with Mesh that provides the most opportunities for everyone engaged, including creators, partners, and customers.

One of the earliest virtual reality social networking applications was AltspaceVR, which lets users join 3D chat rooms to play games, view films, and attend events on headsets and online platforms. Microsoft purchased the firm as part of its ambitions to create its mixed-reality ecosystem when it was on the point of failure in 2017 owing to financial issues. Microsoft said customers may now retrieve their data and content from the VR platform because AltspaceVR has shut down.

With its Mesh platform, a tool to create apps for users to collaborate in augmented reality, Microsoft is still in the metaverse race. However, the corporation has recently reduced its plans for the metaverse. Microsoft recently announced that it will reduce its global staff by 5%, resulting in about 10,000 layoffs. The layoffs include Microsoft’s AR and VR divisions as well; according to Windows Central, the whole AltspaceVR team appears to have been fired. The team behind the ‘Mixed Reality Tool Kit,’ or MRTK, a well-known cross-platform foundation for virtual reality spaces, has been fired by Microsoft. The group responsible for the HoloLens headgear has had several difficulties recently, particularly since Alex Kimpan, who originally led the teams developing Microsoft’s mixed-reality headset and Kinect.

Top 10 Programming Languages For AR And VR Developers In 2023

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies have been making waves in the tech industry in recent years. These cutting-edge technologies provide developers with an array of opportunities to create new, innovative, and immersive experiences. With the increasing popularity of AR and VR devices such as VR headsets, AR glasses, and smart devices, it’s no wonder why developers are keen to get involved in this field. However, with so many programming languages available to choose from, it can be a daunting task to decide which language is best for AR and VR development.

In this article, we will take a look at the top 10 programming languages for AR and VR developers in 2023.

1. C#

C# is a high-level, object-oriented programming language that was developed by Microsoft in 2000. This language is commonly used for developing desktop applications, video games and mobile applications. C# is also a popular choice for AR and VR development due to its ease of use, performance, and wide community support.

One of the main advantages of C# is its integration with Unity, a popular game engine used for AR and VR development. Unity is the perfect platform for creating AR and VR experiences as it provides a user-friendly environment, a huge community of developers, and a wide range of tools and plugins.

2. UnityScript

UnityScript is a scripting language that is specifically designed for Unity development. This language is a derivative of JavaScript, and it is widely used by AR and VR developers due to its simplicity and ease of use. UnityScript allows developers to quickly and easily create AR and VR experiences by making use of the many features available in Unity, such as animations, physics and sound effects.

3. JavaScript

JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages in the world and it is widely used for web development. This language is also a great option for AR and VR development due to its versatility, ease of use, and wide community support.

JavaScript is a versatile language that can be used to create a wide range of AR and VR experiences. Whether you want to create a simple AR game or a more complex VR simulation, JavaScript provides the tools and resources you need to get the job done.

4. Python

Python is a high-level, general-purpose programming language that is widely used for scientific computing, data analysis, and web development. This language is also a popular choice for AR and VR development due to its simplicity, versatility, and wide community support.

5. C++

6. Rust

Rust is a systems programming language that was first released in 2010. Rust is known for its focus on performance and safety, making it an excellent choice for AR and VR developers. One of the key benefits of Rust is its ability to handle low-level hardware operations, making it ideal for low-level programming tasks such as working with GPUs or interfacing with hardware devices.

7.  Swift

Swift is a powerful and popular programming language that was developed by Apple and first released in 2014. Swift is used to developing native iOS and macOS applications, but it has recently gained popularity for its versatility and ease of use. Swift has a clean syntax that is easy to learn, making it a great choice for beginner AR and VR developers.

8. Java

Java is a popular, versatile, and powerful programming language that was first released in 1995. Java is widely used for developing desktop, web, and mobile applications, and it is also a great choice for AR and VR developers. Java has a large and active community, making it easy for developers to find resources and help when needed.

One of the key benefits of Java is its portability. Java applications can run on any platform that has a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed, making it a great choice for developers who want to target multiple platforms. Java also has a large number of libraries, making it easy for developers to add functionality to their AR and VR applications.

9.WebGL

WebGL is a JavaScript API that is used to create 3D graphics in web browsers. It is widely used for creating AR and VR experiences that run on web browsers and is a great choice for developers who want to create experiences that are accessible to a wider audience. WebGL is supported by most modern browsers and provides developers with a range of tools for creating interactive experiences.

Amid Layoffs, Microsoft To Draw Curtains Over Metaverse And VR

Microsoft to draw curtains over Metaverse and VR amid the ongoing layoffs to cut costs

Microsoft, which earlier this year announced layoffs of 5% of its entire workforce, has not spared even its budding divisions focused on Virtual Reality (VR) and the metaverse. AltspaceVR and the Mixed Reality Tool Kit, two related projects, are being shelved by the software behemoth. The metaverse and VR projects in Microsoft’s pipeline may experience delays in development and testing in the coming days. The corporation prioritizes cost-cutting despite the continued market volatility, so 10,000 workers will be let go.

Microsoft was developing virtual worlds with AltspaceVR to act as locations for digital performances by visiting artists. It was a separate platform that Microsoft bought in 2017. This team has been touched by the tech giant’s job layoffs.

The team behind the Mixed Reality Tool Kit was working on projects that would have user interfaces for the metaverse. The division’s future direction is still up in the air.

The US corporation, which has its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, has been stepping up its efforts to enter the metaverse industry. Microsoft has been interacting with AR and VR developers generally by luring in former employees from Apple and Meta.

Satya Nadella, the CEO of the company, has also previously defended the idea of the metaverse and called it a game-changer.

Microsoft has already committed US$69 billion (about Rs. 5,62,574 crore) as a down payment for the metaverse industry.

Its choice to downsize its employees on this front might also be a factor in the Web3 industry’s prolonged downturn.

Before Microsoft, Meta also disclosed that it will be letting go of 11,000 workers, including members of its teams working on the metaverse. The metaverse sector has lost a sizable number of developers to lerch.

These layoffs may delay the execution of plans by advertisers and companies who anticipate using metaverse technology to interact with their Web3 native clients.

By 2024, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, the business opportunity for the metaverse is predicted to be worth US$800 billion (or approximately Rs. 59,58,719 crore).
