Meta’s Fancy Metaverse Gadgets Will Fail To Impress Old Screen Users

Meta is seeking an opportunity to gain a foothold in the market before Apple releases a competitive mixed reality headset of its own

Meta will hold its annual virtual reality conference, Connect, on October 11, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in the first week of September. In an announcement post on Facebook, Zuckerberg appears to be wearing a new headset, the likely Project Cambria, a highly anticipated and powerful mixed-reality headset. According to CNBC, the release timing of the product will allow Meta to gain a foothold in the market before Apple releases a competitive mixed reality headset of its own, reportedly as soon as next year.

Zuckerberg said last month in an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan that the company planned to release Project Cambria in the fall. It’s a hotly expected headset with the computing power to capture the real world with external cameras and display them inside the headset in real-time and in color.

The headset, which will likely cost $800 or more, will be significantly more expensive and capable than the current best-selling headset, the Meta Quest 2. But with every new thing, Meta does in/for Metaverse things get ruined for everyone including the company.

Recently Meta brought an AI-powered tool on Monday, called Sphere. It’s intended to help detect and address misinformation, or “fake news”, on the internet. Meta claims that it’s “the first [AI] model capable of automatically scanning hundreds of thousands of citations at once to check whether they truly support the corresponding claims.”

The metaverse is looking less and less exciting all the time with brands hosting bizarre events nobody wants to attend, but the slew of companies bringing VR realities to life certainly isn’t failing for a lack of trying. Employees at Facebook say founder and company head Mark Zuckerberg is obsessed with the concept of Metaverse and they are worried now.

According to the report, Zuckerberg is focused solely on metaverse content creation but says the project will take a decade or more to complete, likely requiring improvements to the Oculus Quest 2, also called Meta Quest 2 since Facebook purchased Oculus and later changed its name. Despite the project’s scope, Zuckerberg isn’t giving employees a clear strategy, but he still wants to inform every department company-wide about the pivot to focusing on the metaverse.

Mark Zuckerberg is pulling out all the stops on what he sees as the next generation of the internet since he believes it’s going to be a big part of the digital economy. Critics keep thinking about whether the potential turn could be a work to occupy from the organization’s emergencies, including antitrust crackdowns, a declaration by whistleblowing previous representatives, and concerns about its handling of misinformation.

Former employee Frances Haugen has blamed Facebook’s platforms for harming children and inciting political violence after copying internal research documents and turning them over to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. They also were provided to a group of media outlets, including The Associated Press, which reported numerous stories about how Facebook prioritized profits over safety and hid its research from investors and the public.

Why won’t it work?

People have been talking about this future for decades and it never really comes close to what anyone has envisioned. The question is, why is there a renewed focus? It comes down to this: If we had a metaverse that dictated our relationships, a place where we kept assets and interacted with politics, then whoever controls that metaverse is the closest thing we have to a scientific god. The reason this is getting so much attention is that everyone is freaked out by the idea of a scientific god named Mark Zuckerberg.

There are some very uncomfortable things about all of this. We live in a capitalist society — money equals options. The people with the most options in the world, specifically Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg, either want to be off the planet or they want to create a different universe on this planet. It feels like the mother of all abdications. “We don’t want to improve the world, we want to go to a different world.” It seems somewhat nihilistic and strange.

Robotics Is Part Of Computer Science, Or Maybe Engineering

Published

Robotics Is Part Of Computer Science, Or Maybe Engineering

Engineering, or even computer science, includes robotics

Software and hardware both makeup robots. Engineering techniques are applied to create the robot’s physical components, while computer science is used to create the software that provides the machine with the intelligence it needs to do its work. As a result, robotics is an engineering and computer science topic that crosses several disciplines and is mainly used in AI. Automation reduces the need for human intervention through the use of robotics. The term “robotics” was taken from the word “robot,” which was popularised by Czech playwright Karel Capek in his 1920 play, Rossum’s Universal Robots (R.U.R).

The foundation of a robot is composed of these basic elements. A typical robot is composed of three fundamental parts. They are:

  • Mechanical components
  • Electrical components
  • Software components

Mechanical Components – Robotic Hardware

All robots are built in some fashion, whether it be a frame, form, or shape, that is intended to carry out a specific purpose. The mechanical engineering component primarily focuses on developing the robot’s shape for its intended use. Electrical components power and regulate the machinery of robots. These parts give the robot energy and enable it to do the task at hand.

Electrical Components – Robotic Electronics

Electrical components of the robot power and regulate the robotic equipment. With the aid of a basic electrical circuit, the electric current flows through wires to operate a system of sensors and motors and comes from a power source or battery. Electrical signals are used for various types of sensing, including the sense of heat, sound, position, or the state of the robot’s energy supply, as well as for the robot’s operation. Robots are controlled electrically through motors rather than their mechanical components (Robots require some degree of electrical energy to activate and move their motors and sensors).

Software Components – Robotic Software

The majority of robots have some sort of software component that allows for programming. It is the instruction set that a robot utilizes to decide when or how to act. The effectiveness of a robot is directly proportional to the caliber of its software. The software of a robot determines how well it performs, regardless of how well its mechanical and electrical components are built.

Three different categories of robotic programs exist:

Manual control

The robot’s function when a human operator physically controls the robot’s mechanical, electronic, or software components.

Autonomous control

An autonomous robot’s programming will establish a series of decision-tree-based pre-programmed orders that will only be carried out when the robot gets a signal from a control source, such as a person using a remote control.

Artificial Intelligence based control

Artificially intelligent AI robots are the most powerful category of robots. They can interact with their environment on their own without the need for a control source. They can compute their responses to the objects and issues they come across using the pre-conditioned software. These kinds of robots often continuously learn over time as they are put through their paces.

The Future of Robotics and Robots:

Robots will continue to progress from being rote machines to collaborators with cognitive abilities thanks to improved sensor technology and more astounding developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Robotics will greatly benefit from these developments, which are on an upward trajectory for these and other related sectors.

We may anticipate seeing greater numbers of increasingly smart robots coexisting with humans in more contexts. These upgraded robots won’t replace workers, despite the predictions of doomsday prophets with a gloomy mindset. In the face of new technologies that create new prospects for employment and education, industries flourish and fall, and some even become obsolete. Robots are an example of this. The requirement for qualified experts to program, maintain and repair the machines will likely outweigh the necessity for human employees to weld car frames. This frequently entails that workers may acquire beneficial in-house training and upskilling, providing them with a set of abilities that they may use in disciplines and industries other than robotics, including programming and maintaining robots.

The Future of Robotics: How Robots Will Change the World:

Robotics will boost productivity and economic growth while giving many people throughout the world new work opportunities. However, there are still warnings about significant job losses, such as predictions of 20 million manufacturing job losses by 2030 or the possibility of 30% of all employment being automated by that year.

However, because of the consistently high levels of precision that robots provide, we can anticipate that they will take on more of the taxing, redundant manual labor activities, improving healthcare, and transportation, and freeing up people to improve themselves. Time will ultimately determine how this all turns out, of course.

Tesla’s AI Robot Optimus Could’ve Done More Than Just Show Up- Experts

Tesla’s AI Robot Optimus disappoints the experts; critics think that the future is still far off

The much-anticipated Tesla’s AI Robot Optimus prototype has finally been unveiled by Elon Musk. The robot, which the Tesla CEO envisions being sold as a “general purpose” but that is less expensive than a car and equally capable of working in factories and performing household tasks, walks on two legs.

The presentation of Tesla’s Optimus at Tesla’s AI Day was loaded with the customary hype and deception from Elon Musk. It did, however, give roboticists a commendably thorough view of some of the AI Robot’s genuine capabilities. Their assessment? Although the experts at Tesla have made amazing progress in such a short period, AI Robot Optimus is still a research robot that will take several years to develop into anything useful. With the introduction of Optimus, Tesla joined a plethora of other automakers engaged in the humanoid robot industry. Experts have had the last laugh at the launch.

Before we begin to know what experts have to say, let us know what was presented at the Tesla AI Day event-

  • Two robots were shown. The first, known as Bumble C, was a “rough development robot” that could be seen moving boxes and picking up watering cans as it crossed the stage during prerecorded demonstrations. Musk referred to the second robot as having an external covering and being “pretty close to what will go into production.” But it was only ever shown waving its hands and was only ever used as a prop, wheeled around by Musk.
  • Musk reiterated his goal to develop “a usable humanoid robot as rapidly as possible,” one that can be “produced in extremely high number, eventually millions of units,” and that will “cost much less than a vehicle — far less than $20,000.”
  • For Optimus, we have some basic specifications. It is 73 kg in weight, with 28 degrees of articulation in its limbs, and is powered by a 2.3 kWh battery, which according to Tesla, can last all day at work.
  • In a Q&A session at the end of the presentation, Musk said clients will be able to order one “within three years, probably not more than five years,” and he reiterated the rumors that the bot could one day “be like a friend.”

Those are some rough things that happened on that day but what do the experts have to say?

Florida State University robotics professor Christian Hubicki shared his opinions in a Twitter conversation, saying that while the Tesla team had “come a great way in approximately a year,” the actual skills of Tesla’s AI Robot Optimus were “normal (but not mind-blowing) for humanoids.”

Hubicki observes in his thread that the Optimus robot appears to walk using a robotics technique known as zero moment point, or ZMP. This form of locomotion has been used for years by well-known robots like Honda’s Asimo. According to Hubicki, this walking style is “very safe, but not mind-blowing in 2022.”

He adds that the presentation’s dependability is still another important topic that is left unanswered. “How frequently does it fall? You can’t tell from a cool video, or even from a live demo,” the speaker asserts. Reliability is a major consideration when it comes to using robots in manufacturing facilities, since any downtime on an assembly line may have a big ripple impact.

The first two Optimus bot prototypes, according to Will Jackson, CEO of Engineered Arts, were “decidedly deficient” and without “any innovation.” They share a lot of similarities with Honda’s Asimo robots, whose research has since been discontinued, according to Jackson. “The hands are fairly rudimentary, and the overall design is heavily built, clunky, and power wasteful. The only saving grace is a clutch mechanism in the finger activation. Compare the gear revealed this year to the reveal from last year, which featured a man in a robot suit, to see how far they have come from human-level movements and skills.

Jackson applauded Tesla’s work on AI in general and the company’s engineers’ commitment, but he questioned the company’s decision to create a humanoid robot for manual labor in the first place. “I find it incredible that Musk can speak to a group of people who are so fervently in love with the concept of a humanoid and completely miss the fact that their desire to communicate with a robot is the driving motive. Did he believe they were cheering because a humanoid robot capable of lifting a pipe in car manufacturing would finally be available to the world?

He concluded that the presentation displayed “an exceptionally bold live exhibition of a tremendous effort that sadly lacks creativity and imagination” and expressed the hope that “by the time of next year we will witness a course correction.”

India’s AI-Fication Of Defense: Arjun Main Battle Tank

India’s AI-fication of defense enables Arjun war tank to get artificial intelligence capabilities

India’s AI-fication of Defense is in the hot discussion. The MK1A, an improved version of the Arjun platform, with advanced firepower, maneuverability, and survivability has been designed and developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The Janes report revealed that Bangalore-based Tonbo Imaging is building the system in collaboration with the state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) plant in Chennai, India.

The report mentioned, “Tonbo Imaging is partnered with BEL, Chennai, to meet [BEL’s] demand for fire-control systems. Hence, BEL offered a contract to manufacture and deliver the electro-optical fire-control system for Arjun MK1A MBTs.” The Elpeos fire-control product will be delivered as part of the deal and integrated into the Arjun Main Battle tank. ELPEOS contains a cooled MWIR imager with high resolution, a color CCD camera, a Laser Range Finder, and an integrated ballistic computer. For target acquisition and georeferencing, it can optionally incorporate a GPS and a Digital Magnetic Compass with an inclinometer. This system provides a convenient way for tanks to acquire, lock, and engage moving targets using human or automatic tracking. The system has some silent features like automatic target detection, tracking, and classification. It is lightweight and has low power consumption. With numerous cutting-edge technology systems, the MK1A is outfitted with precise and superior firepower, all-terrain mobility, and unbreakable multi-layered protection. India’s AI-fication of Defense has introduced AI in Indian defense with upgraded Arjun Main Battle tank

Arjun MK1A Tank

Arjun MK1A Tank is the updated version of the Arjun Tank developed by the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) and other DRDO research facilities. The tank has multiple important enhancements over the Arjun MBT, the Indian Army’s existing main combat tank in service. Moreover, the AI in Arjun Battle tank makes it capable to operate in all terrains and engage targets at night. The tank is outfitted with advanced technologies using artificial intelligence. Because of this, the indigenous MBT is at par with any modern tank in its class elsewhere in the world. The tank is specifically designed for Indian conditions, making it appropriate for deployment to protect the borders effectively. The order is anticipated to provide 200 Indian vendors, including micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs), with the opportunity to engage in manufacturing.
