Embattled crypto lender Celsius Network has revealed via email that some of its customers’ data were breached by an employee of Customer.io.

Announcement from Celsius: “We are writing to let you know that we
were recently informed by our vendorhttps://t.co/452EROQtbc that one of their employees
accessed a list of Celsius client email
addresses held on their platform and
transferred those to a third-party.”

— Celsians (@CelsiansNetwork) July 28, 2022

Great news out of Celsius today: #Celsius distributed a report (which was late, as usual) regarding the data breach of clients’ emails on June 30 — which likewise involved four other companies, including @opensea. Not a surprise to see Celsius picking customer.i0 as a vendor. Lol pic.twitter.com/3JXszSYFAu

According to Celsius, the firm has been discussing with Customer.io and confirmed that no other data was affected by the breach.

Celsius downplays the extent of the breach

The crypto lender has downplayed the extent of the breach as it said the leak had not impacted its systems and security.

Celsius said it only made its users aware of the breach and did not “consider the incident to present any high risks.”

We do not consider the incident to present any high risks to our clients whose email addresses may have been affected but are releasing this communication to make sure you are aware.

Celsius did not reveal the numbers of affected emails and users.

Celsius customers’ data had been previously leaked in April 2021. Then, the company claimed that hackers stole its customers’ data from a third-party email distribution system.

OpenSea recorded a breach too

OpenSea, the popular NFT marketplace, revealed that its email delivery partner leaked user data.

OpenSea revealed the email partner to be Customer.io.

The NFT marketplace warned users that the breach could increase “email phishing attempts.”

The firm advised users to “stay vigilant about (their) email practices,” adding that everyone who has shared their email with the site previously should assume they have been impacted.

Customer.io takes action

In a July 7 blog post, Customer.io said the senior engineer responsible for the leak had the appropriate level of access for their duties.

The firm clarified that only one employee was responsible for the breach. The said employee has been fired and reported to law enforcement agencies.

Ripple Labs Is ‘Interested’ In Bankrupt Crypto Lender Celsius And Its Assets, Company Spokesperson Says

According to a Ripple Labs spokesperson, the distributed ledger company is interested in learning about the bankrupt crypto lender Celsius and its assets. When Ripple’s spokesperson was asked if the blockchain firm was interested in acquiring Celsius, the company declined to say. The news follows Celsius customers begging the bankruptcy court to release funds over dire financial emergencies.

Ripple Spokesperson Explains Distributed Ledger Company Is Interested in the Bankrupt Firm Celsius and the Crypto Lender’s Assets

While Celsius customers await the Southern District of New York bankruptcy court proceedings following the company’s bankruptcy filing on July 13, it seems Ripple Labs is focused on the crypto lending firm’s remaining assets. Reuters reporter Hannah Lang talked to a Ripple spokesperson and the individual told Lang that “[Ripple Labs is] interested in learning about Celsius and its assets, and whether any could be relevant to our business.”

The commentary follows Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse hinting about future mergers and acquisitions (M&A) when the executive visited the 2022 World Economic Forum (WEF) event in Davos. At the time, Garlinghouse said Ripple Labs has “a very strong balance sheet.” He also added that Ripple Labs may participate in future mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals. “We’re now at a stage of growth where I think we’re more likely to be the buyer versus the … seller,” Garlinghouse said at the WEF event.

During an interview at the end of July at the Collision 2022 event, Garlinghouse talked about the company’s growth and the lawsuit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “If Ripple loses the case, does anything change? It’s basically just status quo. Ripple is still growing very, very quickly,” Garlinghouse said at the time. Reuters’ reporter Lang noted on Wednesday that the Ripple Labs spokesperson declined to comment when she asked if Ripple would attempt to acquire Celsius entirely.

Ripple Submits Filings to Celsius Bankruptcy Court Proceedings

The news comes at a time when Celsius customers are upset about their funds and a number of Celsius clients wrote letters to the bankruptcy court begging to get access to their funds. “I and my family are severely impacted both in financial and mental health by the bankruptcy and locked up cryptos,” one Celsius customer told the court. According to Lang’s report, Ripple has submitted filings to the Celsius bankruptcy court proceedings and seeks to be represented. “The court approved the filing earlier this week,” Lang’s report details.

Lang said the Ripple spokesperson’s commentary was in response to Ripple being asked to comment on the court filings. The Reuters report also said that the lawyer representing Ripple in the matter did not provide any statements and Celsius hasn’t responded to Lang’s questions. On July 4, the government of Colombia revealed that Ripple’s distributed ledger would be leveraged in a new blockchain-based land title registry developed by a third-party company called Peersyst Technology.

Ripple Labs could be interested in buying the assets of embattled crypto lender Celsius Network, Reuters reported Aug. 10.

A Ripple spokesperson reportedly said the firm was interested in looking for M&A opportunities to scale its business. However, the San Fransico-based company refused to confirm if it would purchase Celsius assets outright.

“We are interested in learning about Celsius and its assets and whether any could be relevant to our business.”

Reuters also reported that Ripple was represented in the Celsius bankruptcy proceedings.

Meanwhile, Ripple is one of the most valuable firms in the crypto space. The firm was valued at $15 billion in January. The firm also revealed that the net purchases of its XRP token were over $400 million during the second quarter.

Ripple is currently under a legal battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over whether the sales of its token qualify as a security offering.

Ripple is not the first firm to show interest in Celsius. Reports emerged that FTX walked out on a deal to acquire the crypto lender because of a $2 billion hole in its finances.

Celsius was one of the crypto firms affected by the record crash of the crypto market during the second quarter. The lender filed for bankruptcy on July 14 after halting withdrawals on June 12.

Since then, the firm has faced increased scrutiny from several state regulators in the United States. Its CEO Alex Mashinsky was recently accused of publicly giving misleading statements.

Bankrupt Crypto Firm Voyager Digital Approved To Release $270 Million In Cash Deposits

The now defunct and bankrupt Voyager Digital has been approved by the court to distribute $270 million in funds to creditors and affected customers. The news follows the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Federal Reserve Board ordering Voyager to remove any statements that allege Voyager is FDIC insured. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York and Judge Michael Wiles have allowed Voyager’s custodian, Metropolitan Commercial bank, to release the $270 million.

New York Bankruptcy Court Approves Release of $270 Million From Voyager’s Custodian

The TSX-listed crypto exchange Voyager Digital (OTCMKTS: VYGVF) revealed at the end of June that the hedge fund Three Arrows Capital owed the company $655 million. Then on July 1, 2022, Voyager suspended trading, deposits, and withdrawals in order to deal with turbulent crypto “market conditions.”

A week later, Voyager filed for bankruptcy protection after citing “prolonged volatility and contagion in the crypto markets.” Voyager shares exchanged hands at the stock’s peak in April 2021 at $29.86 per share, and today’s shares are swapping for $0.34 per unit.

Now the presiding bankruptcy court judge, Michael Wiles from New York, has allowed $270 million to be released from Voyager’s custodian Metropolitan Commercial bank (MCB), the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

MCB explained to the WSJ that it held the $270 million when Voyager filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11. At the end of July, founder and CEO of the crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, detailed that FTX was offering early liquidity to Voyager customers.

In addition to Voyager, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) has filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection, and the crypto lender Celsius filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Celsius customers have been very upset about the firm’s downturn, as the company claimed it had roughly 1.7 million customers before it collapsed.

Celsius customers recently pleaded with the bankruptcy judge to release funds held on the platform. One client said it was an “emergency situation” as he needed his money to “simply to keep a roof over my family and food on their table.”

It is estimated that Voyager will complete the bankruptcy process by the end of September 2022, but there’s allegedly $1.3 billion worth of crypto stemming from 3.5 million customers stored on Voyager’s platform. CNBC reported on August 3, that Voyager’s CEO Steven Ehrlich obtained more than $30 million by selling Voyager equity in February and March 2021.

While Voyager is a publicly traded firm, last year it adopted an automatic securities disposition plan (ADSP) on December 31, 2021, after Ehrlich’s equity sales. CNBC’s Rohan Goswami reports that on January 20, 2022, Voyager’s CEO removed the ADSP structure. Voyager Digital also had a deal with the Dallas Mavericks and business relationships with Genesis Global Capital and Galaxy Digital.
