THE MOLLIE DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Mollie Davis left a $20 million educational legacy to support two- and four-year scholarships for Yakima County residents when she passed away in December 2008. The Yakima Rotary Trust has been designated as the scholarship program’s administrator. The Yakima Valley Foundation oversees the funding.

Numerous students have received renewable scholarships totaling millions of dollars since the Yakima Rotary Trust originally presented the first awards in 2010.

Mollie, a Yakima resident, decided to reinvest her funds rather than use it for personal expenses. She cherished fishing, preserving elderberry jam, and basting rattlesnakes with pebbles. In her later years, she started to notice a decline in her health, but her mind remained bright till she passed away. When Mollie and Warren Davis got married, they made Hidden Valley Ranch in Thorp their home. Mr. Davis served as a board member of the Ellensburg Rodeo and chairman of the Kittitas County Cattleman Association. Mollie returned to her house on Linden Way in Yakima after the passing of her husband in 1977. She choose to share her kindness with the community only after her passing because she remained so passionately private.

Mollie’s realization that her education investment can serve as a catalyst for change and that her contribution will enable thousands of students to enter college who might not otherwise be able to do so is tremendously fortunate for the Yakima Valley. Let’s applaud Mollie and her vision!

Additionally, the Trust has benefited from numerous kind donations from locals and Rotarians. The initial contributions comprised a $25,000 visionary fund, a $10,000 bequest from Merritt Bloxom’s estate, and a $200,000 bequest from John Quick’s estate. The Trust also received an $825,000 bequest from the estates of Bill and Faye Rounds in 2011.

The Kiwanis and Lions Trusts and the Trust collaborated on the development of Kiwanis Park, which is located in Southeast Yakima, as its inaugural project in 2011. Each Trust received a $100,000 donation from local philanthropist Helen Jewett, and additional financing was secured by the late Congressman Alex Deccio working with the State of Washington and the City of Yakima. When the Gateway Sports Complex was finished, $217,000 in inheritances to the Yakima Rotary Trust had been transformed into a $5 million undertaking. Astonishing changes have been made to the park. The three Yakima Rotary clubs built a playground, a basketball court, and a picnic shelter in 2010. Three youth softball fields with lights and a full-service concessions stand were built in 2012 on adjacent land that the Yakima Rotary Trust had bought.

MISSION PROCLAMATION

To act as a channel for collecting memorial gifts from both Rotarians and Non-Rotarians as well as estate planning donations. The money will be used to enhance the standard of living for locals and visitors to Yakima.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

Kim Stezala, a scholarship program expert from Design Group International in Champaign, Illinois, was asked to provide input on the program assessment. That’s what Ms. Stezala said.

The Mollie Davis Scholarship is a well-run, high-caliber, and highly effective initiative. The program’s architecture, paperwork, and procedures are all quite solid.

In addition, she said, “Overall, this is an excellent initiative that benefits not only the particular grantees but also the larger Yakima region by developing its young people.”

APPLICATION FOR THE MOLLIE DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP

For a Bachelor’s Degree, the Mollie Davis Scholarship plan gives up to $7,500 annually and up to $30,000 total. Additionally, we provide awards of up to $3,500 annually for associate’s degrees.

Each year, the application window opens on 12/1 and expires on 2/22.

Papa John’s International is an American chain of pizza restaurants. It has corporate offices in the metropolitan areas of Louisville, Kentucky, and Atlanta, Georgia, and it is the fourth-largest network of pizza delivery restaurants in the United States.

With more than 5,500 sites across 49 countries and territories, Papa John’s is currently the third-largest pizza delivery business in the world.

In the back of his father’s bar, Mick’s Lounge, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, “Papa” John Schnatter erected an oven in 1984, creating the first Papa John’s restaurant.

He subsequently used the proceeds from the sale of his 1971 Camaro Z28 to buy used pizza equipment for $1,600 and started serving pizza to patrons of the bar from the newly transformed closet.

He relocated into an adjacent room a year later when his pizzas became so well-known. In the same year, Papa John’s Pizza created the dipping sauce that is now widely used when eating pizza, particularly the crust. In 1993, the business went public. It opened 500 stores the next year, and 1,500 by 1997. After posting a reward of $250,000 for the Camaro in 2009, Schnatter ultimately decided to purchase it back.

Since 1999, Papa John’s has been doing business in the UK. The business had 300 stores in the UK as of July 2015, but in 2010, it had intentions to increase that number to 400–500 over the course of five years.

Papa John’s has locations all over Ireland, with its corporate headquarters in Ballybrit, County Galway. The business runs mobile units across the nation from its more than 50 locations. The main business of the fast food chain Supermacs, whose franchise rights are the sole ones for the chain in Ireland, frequently houses the franchises close by.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The United Negro College Fund and the Papa John’s foundation collaborated to offer Black students attending colleges and universities scholarships. Over $5 billion has been raised by UNCF to support low-income students’ college attendance.

Students who are interested in studying business administration and STEM subjects are eligible for the Papa John’s award.
