THE FIAT LUX SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Resilient students with distinctive life experiences have the chance to have a significant influence at the University of California, Berkeley thanks to the Fiat Lux Scholarship.

The program, which was created for top students from partner high schools in California, offers UC Berkeley students financial, social, and academic support.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Fiat Lux Scholarship was created by the faculty at UC Berkeley in 2016 with the intention of drawing talented students from nearby high schools in California to the university.

The scholarship covers the cost of undergraduate study at UC Berkeley for the top students from California. The award offers chances to network with professors, current students, and alumni in order to build long-lasting connections that foster achievement and inspire future pursuits.

No additional application is required; all Berkeley students who apply for financial help are automatically considered. The financial assistance covers the whole cost of attendance up to the amount of need (as determined by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office).

Recipients of the Fiat Lux Scholarship shine brightly in Berkeley. Learn about a scholarship program that opens the door to a lifetime of excellence by providing a wealth of assistance, community, and enrichment.

ELIGIBILITY

Scholarship applicants include:

• Freshmen accepted who attended a partner high school for at least three years and graduated from one of the partners

• Citizens of the US or eligible non-citizens (California Dream Act Application or hold a permanent resident card)

• Residents of California or eligible nonresidents (AB 540 nonresident tuition exemption)

• Eligible for financial help based on need

SELECTION METHOD

Candidates are high-achieving, admissible freshmen with a minimum three-year attendance history at one of the program’s partners high schools.

By submitting their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application, students are automatically considered. Candidates are chosen based on the data they provide in their FAFSA, California Dream Act Application, and admission application. Only those pupils are qualified who have a financial need. Consideration is given to California residents, eligible nonresidents, American citizens, and eligible noncitizens.

Candidates are invited to a one-on-one interview with a Berkeley faculty member in late March as part of a comprehensive assessment process. Early April is the scheduled date for interviews. Scholarship awardees are chosen by Berkeley teachers.

Prior to the May 1 deadline for accepting admission offers, scholars are contacted. The Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors, and Financial Aid are responsible for overseeing the scholarship-awarding process.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Cal Opportunity (CalOp) Scholarship Program and the Incentive Awards Program (IAP) are combined into the Fiat Lux Scholarship Program to:

• Establish a strong scholarship program with a specific focus on the Bay Area, Central Coast region (Salinas), San Jose, Sequoia, Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles.

• Assist college students from low-income families.

• Complement existing UC system-wide initiatives to give all communities open and fair access to opportunities for learning and growth.

The Center for Educational Partnerships at Berkeley provides assistance to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in training scholars to conduct outreach at nearby partner high schools. Through the scholars, this well-established and wildly successful program encourages “giving back.” They help during college information sessions at various events and partner with high schools, serving as aspirational role models for high school students.

 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. MUST I APPLY IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FIAT LUX SCHOLARSHIP?

The Fiat Lux Scholarship is not available through a separate or supplemental application. If a student is from a Fiat Lux partner school, their application to UC Berkeley will be immediately considered for the scholarship. There are numerous different university scholarships you will still be evaluated for if you are not chosen as a candidate. Don’t forget to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Help (FAFSA) for financial aid, and the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office will let you know in April if you qualify for any university scholarships. Students who don’t have a need for money are not eligible.

2. I’M A POTENTIAL FIAT LUX SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT. WHEN AND HOW WILL I BE INFORMED THAT I WON THE PRIZE? HOW CAN I TAKE THE PRIZE?

Students are informed sometime around the third week of April. Your scholarship award can also be viewed online at CalCentral under My Finances. Sign and send your scholarship contract to CalCentral to accept your Fiat Lux Scholarship. The Fiat Lux Scholarship Contract Terms and Conditions were accessible for your consideration as a link on your award notification letter, and you ought to have read them.

3. IF I RECEIVE ANY MORE SCHOLARSHIPS, WOULD MY FIAT LUX SCHOLARSHIP BE ADJUSTED?

Yes. The school may be required to modify the amount of the Fiat Lux Scholarship if outside agency awards are taken into account when determining your overall financial need.

4. IF I HAVE TO MISS SOME SCHOOL, WILL I FORFEIT MY FIAT LUX SCHOLARSHIP?

Fiat Lux scholars have the option of taking two semesters off from their awards. Before obtaining a leave of absence, scholars must enroll for one semester at UC Berkeley. For any semester in which they have previously received the scholarship, scholars are not permitted to request a leave of absence. A Leave of Absence form must be filled out and delivered to your designated scholarship coordinator.

The University Of Sydney Scholarship Program

Founded in 1850 as a free university, the University of Sydney is now a well-known name in higher education.

The University was established on the two guiding principles of accepting all religions and admitting students based only on academic ability. No matter their religious affiliation, pupils were admitted on the first principle. The second is the idea that students “matriculated” into universities by doing well on academic tests.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, both concepts challenged conventional university models and offered fresh perspectives on universities. They were modified by our founders to build a university that would suit the colonial circumstances of New South Wales. They were born out of serious discussions about the purpose of universities in Britain and Europe.

In order to prepare for the writing of Australia’s First: A History of the University of Sydney (2 vols. ), the University of Sydney started an oral history project in the 1970s. jointly published in 1991 and 1996 by the university and Hale and Irmonger). Prof. K. Cable, Prof. W. F. Connell, and Dr. U. Bygott interviewed former university employees and students from the middle of the 1970s to the early 1990s. These interviews were captured on cassette cassettes, which the university has been keeping for the past 30 years or so. The project was reintroduced in the early 2000s by the University Historian, Professor Julia Horne, and soon you will be able to hear from the University’s trailblazing faculty and employees.

Students and employees at the University of Sydney joined in the AIF and other services when World War I started in July 1914. From working in the medical corps and the artillery on the Front Line to being munitions workers and linguists at Top Secret locations in Britain. Visit Beyond 1914 to learn more about the lives of these men and women.

Additionally serving in World War II were university employees and students. To learn more about this history, the University Archives and University Historian are collaborating on the digital project “Beyond 1939: War and Reconstruction.” The Chancellor’s Committee has graciously donated funds to our endeavor. More will follow.
