The Ferrier Research Institute is offering a Master of Drug Discovery and Development Scholarship to qualified international candidates the chance to apply for a scholarship to do a taught Master’s program at Victoria University of Wellington.
Victoria University of Wellington is a university in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1897 by the Act of Parliament and was a constituent college of the University of New Zealand.
The university is very popular for its programs in law, the humanities, and some scientific disciplines, and offers a wide range of other courses. However, entry to all courses in the first year is open, and entry to the second year in some programs (e.g. law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, engineering is prohibited.
Victoria University of Wellington had the highest average research grade in the New Zealand Government’s Performance-Based Research Fund exercise in both 2012 and 2018, having been rated 4th in 2006 and 3rd in 2003.
The university has been rated 215th in the World’s Top 500 universities by the QS World University Rankings (2020). In 2010 there was widespread condemnation of Victoria University of Wellington removing the Gender Studies department. In 2017, a minor in Gender Studies was made available.
In response to this, a spokesperson for Victoria University of Wellington stated that “student safety was a key focus, and the university had partnered with police and Wellington City Council to encourage awareness of personal safety”.
In late 2015, academics and students at Victoria University of Wellington spoke out at the university hosting Israeli Defence Force troops for a public lecture.
However, the opposition to this public lecture came about because of the soldiers’ involvement in Operation Protective Edge, which is thought to have killed at least 2000 Palestinians, most of them civilians.
Also in 2016, Victoria University of Wellington was mired in a row with the Tertiary Education Union, when it was discovered that union members were being paid less than non-union members.
This led the TEU to describe the Vice-Chancellor Grant Guilford as being anti-union and resulted in a one-day strike.
The successful candidate for the Master of Drug Discovery and Development Scholarship will receive NZ $15,000. Note that this award can only be used towards the candidate’s tuition fee.
Requirements for the Master of Drug Discovery and Development Scholarship
- The Master of Drug Discovery and Development Scholarship is open to all international students but only after they have enrolled and completed one trimester of research towards their postgraduate research in Drug Discovery and Development.
- The scholarship is open to all qualifying international students i.e students who do not have New Zealand residency and who are not New Zealand citizens. Candidates must meet program-specific eligibility criteria and University eligibility criteria.
- You must obtain an appropriate visa to study in New Zealand. The scholarship becomes payable on enrolment and must be used against tuition fees only.
- Holders of this for the Master of Drug Discovery and Development Scholarship will be expected to work on a research project under the supervision of a Ferrier Research Institute staff member, on a project approved by the Director of the Ferrier Research Institute, or his delegated nominee.
- Please note that selection criteria include academic performance, publications and/or conference proceedings, referee reports, and any other real demonstration of academic or research ability.

- Candidates must be international students.
- Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a relevant life science subject such as Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, or other relevant subjects, with an average of at least a B+ in 300-level Chemistry.
- Applicants must be intending to enroll in a taught Master’s program (Master of Drug Discovery and Development) at Victoria University of Wellington.
