FTX Co-Founder’s Alleged Extravagance Comes to Light in Bankruptcy Court Documents

Following the court filing that shows FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) wants access to FTX’s $460 million in Robinhood shares, Delaware bankruptcy court documents show tens of millions were spent by the FTX team in 2022 on living accommodations, hotels, food, and flights. Moreover, SBF’s quantitative trading firm allegedly owes more than $55,000 to Jimmy Buffett’s beach resort, Margaritaville, after Alameda and FTX executives occupied 20 suites for a few months last year.

Experts Predict Future Regulation Of Crypto Exchanges By 2025, With Split Opinion On Similarity To Traditional Finance

Following finder.com’s reports on bitcoin and ethereum predictions, the product comparison site polled 56 specialists in the fintech and cryptocurrency industry to gauge their thoughts on future regulation of crypto exchanges. The experts predict that virtual currency trading platforms will be regulated, but not until 2025 or 2030. When regulation does occur, 76% of Finder’s panelists expect the trading platforms to be treated similarly to traditional financial institutions.

87% of Finder’s Fintech and Crypto Experts Believe Exchanges Must Disclose Proof-of-Reserves Audits

A recently published report from finder.com, which polled 56 experts in the fintech and cryptocurrency industry, shows that 87% believe exchanges will need to disclose proof-of-reserves audits and liability records. The specialists reveal that standard regulations for crypto exchanges will not occur until 2025 or 2030.

While 76% of the panelists believe crypto trading platforms will be regulated similarly to traditional finance platforms, 17% expect this to happen by 2024. 22% predict regulation by 2025, and 35% expect it to take place in 2030.

“Any exchanges that remain need to get with the program, proof of reserves and liabilities should be prerequisites and non-negotiable for people selecting where they trade,” Swyftx’s head of strategy Tommy Honan said.

Honan believes, alongside 87% of the panelists, that exchanges need to provide a record of liabilities and proof-of-reserves. “Exchanges also need to continue to upskill their users on self-custody and lean into new and innovative products that support it,” Honan added.

Split Views on Crypto Regulation: 15% Buck Tradition, Half Believe Industry Will Weather the Storm

About 15% of Finder’s panel, including Cryptoconsultz CEO Nicole DeCicco, do not believe crypto exchanges should be regulated similarly to traditional financial institutions. However, DeCicco predicts that standard regulations will be enforced throughout the crypto industry by 2024.

“It’s imperative though we warn investors about the risks involved,” DeCicco said in a statement. “At Cryptoconsultz we teach our clients to think of cold storage and self-custody solutions as their bank account and centralized exchanges similar to the money one might pull out of an ATM and walk around with in their pocket,” the executive added.

Approximately 42% of Finder’s experts believe that the number of customers for crypto exchanges will continue to decline following several bankruptcies in the industry, including the FTX collapse. 84% of the panelists emphasized that the cryptocurrency industry will survive the FTX implosion that occurred in November 2022.

42.31% predict that more crypto trading platforms will go bankrupt due to customer losses, with more than 15% thinking this will happen in five years and 26.92% within a year. However, exactly half of Finder’s panelists believe that no such event will occur.

Bitcoin Short Squeeze May Reach $30,000, Top Crypto Trader Predicts

Bitcoin Short Squeeze May Reach $30,000, Top Crypto Trader Predicts

As Bitcoin breaks out of the $21k level, many crypto analysts have begun projecting further rallies for the asset. One of the famous crypto strategists, Crypto Kaleo, recently gave a high price prediction for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

Addressing his over 550,000 followers on Twitter, Kaleo says BTC is preparing for a rally to $30,000. Bitcoin last saw $30,000 during the bear market in June 2022. However, the crypto strategist believes there would be fluctuations as Bitcoin targets $30,000, albeit his bullish stance.

In his words, the market should expect more falls before Bitcoin reaches $30,000. According to Kaleo, there would be some lows beneath $20k, which would trigger lower positions before Bitcoin can be ready for the short squeeze.

A short squeeze occurs when crypto traders borrow assets at a particular price, hoping to sell them lower and keep the difference. These traders often use overleverage short positions in the futures market. However, the traders would have no choice but to buy the borrowed assets as price propulsion pushes against them, sparking more rallies as market makers take out their liquidity to keep the momentum.

Kaleo is confident that the short squeeze is approaching since the BTC price has already jumped above 23% within seven days.

Bitcoin Rally Could Signal Increased Volatility

BTC has witnessed several bullish indicators since the beginning of 2023, bringing it to a year-high of over $21,000. Bitcoin’s bullish rallies have boosted crypto traders’ hopes that the long-running bear market could end soon.

There has been a reduction in the Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index to neutral, which might cause an increase in trading volume.

A massive increase in Bitcoin trading volume followed the recent price surge. Throughout the past week, Bitcoin trading volume has climbed above double the initial value, reaching $10.8 billion, a 114% increase.

An increase in trading volume often leads to a spike in volatility. Bitcoin’s current seven-day volatility level of 2.4% is below the 2022 value of 3.1% but remained stable during the recent rally. There is a likelihood that the constantly increasing trading volume during the rally may cause a spike in volatility.

Centralized exchanges (CEXs) had to battle with low trading volume, which means lower transaction fees and revenue, including staff layoffs. Therefore, the rising trading volume is a welcomed development for the exchanges and BTC traders.

Bitcoin Recovery Underway As Realized Profit And Trading Volume Increase

According to Glassnode’s data, on-chain realized profits for BTC return to the adjusted spent output profit ratio (aSOPR) value of 1.0. Some analysts believe it is the critical resistance level. The aSOPR historically indicates a shift in the total market cycle when increasing demands (trading volumes) absorb profits.

BTC’s on-chain realized profit and loss ratio has jumped over the 1.0 mark, recording 1.56 profits against the January 16 losses. This marked a reversal of the downtrend that started in May 2022. An increase in realized gain without a price drop indicates market strength.

On-chain analytics by Glassnode also suggest that a BTC price recovery is underway. As the market absorbs more selling pressure without a fall in price, the overall fear and macro shift will reduce.

Technically, volatility, trading volume, and realized profits are pushing BTC decoupling from equities. Bitcoin’s previous price action correlates to US equities.

The correlation to equities might have been due to asset accumulation by institutional investors. The correlation has reduced now that institutional investors hold fewer BTC and might exit the market in the future.

Former FTX President Launches New Crypto Venture, Raises $5 Million From Leading Investors

Less than a week ago, Brett Harrison, the former president of FTX US, published a 49-part Twitter thread describing his side of the story when he worked for the disgraced co-founder of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF). On Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, Harrison revealed that his new firm, Architect, has raised $5 million from investors such as Circle Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, and SALT Fund.

Brett Harrison’s Architect Aims to Connect Institutional Investors Across Decentralized and Centralized Exchanges

Brett Harrison, the former president of FTX who left the company in Sept. 2022, has started a new venture aimed at attracting institutions to the world of decentralized finance (defi). “It’s a software company aimed at building institutional-grade infrastructure to connect various crypto venues across decentralized and centralized exchanges,” Harrison told Techcrunch reporter Jacquelyn Melinek on Friday.

Harrison’s new venture and fresh capital raise follow the former president of FTX US recounting how he left the company and his relationship with its co-founder, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF). Harrison detailed that his relationship with SBF and the FTX CEO’s deputies “had reached a point of total deterioration.” In the 49-part Twitter thread, Harrison mentioned a new crypto startup he was working on. Harrison tweeted about the capital raise on Friday and said, “I’m very happy to announce the founding of [Architect] and the closing of our [$5 million] seed round.”

Harrison added:

Architect will build institutional-grade trading technology that streamlines crypto market structure, making it easier and safer for firms and large traders to access decentralized protocols and centralized exchanges alike. Architect’s products will embody our commitment to security, self-custody, extensibility, and open source design.

In addition to Circle Ventures and Coinbase Ventures, Architect received a capital injection from Motivate Venture Capital, SALT Fund, SV Angel, P2P Validator, Third King Venture Capital, Shari Glazer, and Anthony Scaramucci, the founder of Skybridge Capital. Harrison’s Architect fundraising also follows a recent interview with FTX’s new CEO, John J. Ray III, who told The Wall Street Journal that FTX was exploring the possibility of restarting the now-defunct crypto exchange.
